Die Faster

What has passed for ‘science’ as a ‘great boon to humanity’ has only served to accelerate death. Instead, we require an alternative approach to understanding the world that brings us back to our eternal existence of knowledge and bliss in the service of the all-blissful source of all knowledge, Krishna. Krishna in the Bhagavad-Gita teaches us the essence of what we NEED to know. Meanwhile, our empiric approach to trying to understand (actually overstand) the world around us using our limited mind and senses has proved to be a failure. In the pursuit of knowledge under the banner of ‘science’ the result is negative with the characteristic that as a result of hundreds of years of ‘science’ we can now reap the harvest and DIE FASTER.

By the empiricists we are tempted to know everything from a god-like viewpoint as masters, above, and controlling. The desire to know this way goes against our inherent nature as servants of the Supreme Lord, lovingly subordinate and humble. The natural approach to learning and gaining knowledge about the Lord’s creation is one of submission and service with humility. Just as God provides the air we breath, the water we drink and the food that sustains us, he also provides complete knowledge for all our legitimate needs in the form of the revealed Vedas. Srimad Bhagavatam is the distilled essence of all the Vedas and thus it is sufficient in itself to satisfy all legitimate human scientific inquiry.

This creation is nothing but a transformation of the energy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and thus it inherits His quality of achintya (inconceivability). She is also called Maya (illusion). The nature of illusion is such that the more we try to dominate and control her, the more we become entangled in her network of darkness, confusion and suffering. This represents darkness for us, the living souls bound in her powerful grip. The attempt to “know” darkness via our measuring instruments only takes us into further darkness and prolongs our bondage in the cycle of birth and death. The attempt to “know” illusion and master illusion is tantemount to trying to “know the unknowable”. It is a vain attempt that is a hope never to be fulfilled. It leads the soul to depravity and keeps him from his true eternal, blissful and cognizant nature.

On the other hand, there is good news. Krishna is the Supremely Knowable object for us. As we are conscious persons, so Krishna is the Supreme Conscious Eternal Leader, Sustainer and Origin of all other conscious persons. He CAN be known and indeed SHOULD be known. We EXIST to know Him.

As the Lord says in the first verse of the seventh chapter of Bhagavad-Gita:

“Now hear, O son of Pṛthā [Arjuna], how by practicing yoga in full consciousness of Me, with mind attached to Me, you can know Me in full, free from doubt.”

If we are humble and submissive, we CAN KNOW KRISHNA! We will be fully successful as true scientists under the scientific process of bhakti yoga (devotional service). By the means of empiricism and mental speculation we are lost to the ways of the demons–the anti-gods who are forever ungrateful, rebellious, and posses all bad qualities like lust, anger, greed, illusion, envy and madness. By the means of devotional service on the other hand, we acquire all the godly qualities:

“The Blessed Lord said: Fearlessness, purification of one’s existence, cultivation of spiritual knowledge, charity, self-control, performance of sacrifice, study of the Vedas, austerity and simplicity; nonviolence, truthfulness, freedom from anger; renunciation, tranquility, aversion to faultfinding, compassion and freedom from covetousness; gentleness, modesty and steady determination; vigor, forgiveness, fortitude, cleanliness, freedom from envy and the passion for honor—these transcendental qualities, O son of Bharata, belong to godly men endowed with divine nature.” (BG 16.1-3)

The choice is ours. We can remain ever ignorant of what this universe is by attempting to dominate nature and bring her under our control with the concomitant attendant miseries of birth, death old age and disease, OR we can regain our eternal nature under the guidance of our benevolent Supreme Master which brings us to a state of full bliss and knowledge.
