The Vedas were written down by Vyasadeva over 5,000 years ago in Sanskrit, the oldest discovered language on earth. The faithful transmission of knowledge from spiritual master to disciple gives us access to a culture of knowledge with impeccable fidelity to the first Person in the chain: Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada continued this tradition by creating the first word-for-word English translations and commentaries on the essential Vaishnava literatures Bhagavad-Gita, Srimad-Bhagavatam and Chaitanya Charitamrita.
In the Bhagavad-Gita, Krishna declares that He is the “source of all spiritual and material worlds” and that “everything emanates” from Him. There He also declares that “through all the Vedas” He is to be known. The Bhagavad-Gita is a summary of all the Vedas for modern-day readers and serves as the foundation for understanding of the “most confidential knowledge”. Then, the post-graduate study begins in the Srimad-Bhagavatam (also known as the Bhagavata Purana). In his commentary on this great work, Srila Prabhupada writes, “…Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is not only a superior literature but is the ripened fruit of all Vedic literatures”.
The second verse declares: “Completely rejecting all religious activities which are materially motivated, this Bhāgavata Purāṇa propounds the highest truth, which is understandable by those devotees who are fully pure in heart. The highest truth is reality distinguished from illusion for the welfare of all. Such truth uproots the threefold miseries. This beautiful Bhāgavatam, compiled by the great sage Vyāsadeva [in his maturity], is sufficient in itself for God realization. What is the need of any other scripture? As soon as one attentively and submissively hears the message of Bhāgavatam, by this culture of knowledge the Supreme Lord is established within his heart.”
